Music and Food Recipes

I was watching a cooking show the other day, and while watching the chef prepare the food masterfully with his hands, I was reminded of something. Musicians and chefs are much alike – in a sense that they both use their hands to make art. The Chef’s art fills the taste buds while the musician’s art fills the ears. In essence you can equate looking for music sheets to looking for recipes. So while I was in the mood for some good music, I checked out a site with Food Recipes.  While looking at the recipes, I find that most of the wisdom of cooking – can be translated into good principles in making music.  One example is that ingredients should be freshed and prepared before cooking - you can equate ingredients into licks or scales or even effects – that you practice or prepared before hand.  And then the actual cooking itself can be equated to the act of making music, mixing just the right amount of licks, scales and effects to come up with a tasteful solo.  So for all of us musicians, we can learn a lesson or two by cooking ourselves from time to time. Here is a simple recipe that I’ll be trying out later:

Special Pancake

Ingredients
4 cups unbleached flour
1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup powdered sugar
3 tablespoons baking powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 cup powdered milk
4 eggs
1/2 cup butter, melted
4 cups brewed coffee (weak)
2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Instructions
1. In large mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, powdered sugar, baking powder and salt, then set aside.
2. In separate bowl, blend powdered milk, eggs, butter, coffee and vanilla.
3. Pour liquid ingredients into dry ingredients and blend well.
4. Using 1/3 cup measuring cup, pour batter onto griddle and cook cakes until they have numerous bubbles in wet batter then flip and cook until golden brown.
