Rehearsals

July is understandably a busy month for me because it is the anniversary month of our local church, which I am currently the musical director. However this year, it’s not just me that is busy, my son and my students are also busy rehearsing for their upcoming recital.

It’s funny and at the same time amazing that my son has grown to an age where he can play with a band! His interest in music is probably the best legacy that I have imparted on him. Having the same talent and looks is just as much of a confirmation as having paternity testing done. It will be a busy month for both of us… :)

Clutter Free Stage

Now that we’ve been upgrading the gear that we are using at church, we are faced with a different kind of problem – how do we make our stage clean and clutter free.

We recently acquired a bigger mixer and we’re planning to finally have all the instruments properly mic’ed. However, there are now too many cables and its getting harder to maintain them in working order.

We are thinking of getting cable management tools, or maybe get one of those expensive snake cables, another thing we’re looking at is to have all the vocal mics be wireless.

Vocal Workshop

We recently had our vocal workshop conducted by vocal coach extraordinaire Jeanne Velasco-Vicars. I was a bit surprised to find out that some of who I consider to be good singers are actually using wrong vocal techniques. And its amazing how she can have people adjust their singing techniques based on which ever works for them, either visual, vocal instructions or sound examples.

I’ve been thinking of getting a good vocal effect like the electro harmonix 12ay7 mic pre for the worship leaders to help improve the sound. And maybe in the future we can buy replacement vocal chords and even ears to give us instant singing voice improvements.

Hopefully we can apply the things that we learned to improve our worship singing, specially since we are doing it for the creator of music Himself.
